Our Comprehensive Asbestos Encapsulation Solution

Our comprehensive asbestos service at Astech Environmental Ltd covers every facet of asbestos management, ensuring your safety and compliance with the highest standards.

It all begins with our meticulous asbestos surveys, conducted by our accredited specialists. These surveys are a vital first step, identifying any asbestos-containing materials within your premises. Once identified, samples are carefully collected and sent for precise lab analysis.

Our team, with years of experience, then interprets the lab results, providing you with a clear understanding of the asbestos present and the level of risk it poses. Armed with this knowledge, we move on to the next critical stage: encapsulation.

The encapsulation process involves expertly sealing asbestos materials with a specially formulated protective coating, rendering them safe and preventing the release of harmful fibres. This approach is not only highly effective but also cost-efficient compared to complete removal. It minimises disruption to your property and ensures ongoing safety.

At Astech Environmental, we offer a comprehensive solution that prioritises safety, efficiency, and your peace of mind. Trust us to manage asbestos effectively, safeguarding your environment.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos enjoyed widespread use from the late 19th century due to its exceptional heat resistance and durability. It found applications in construction, shipbuilding, automotive manufacturing, and more.

However, due to mounting evidence of its severe health risks, asbestos was banned in many countries starting in the late 20th century. In the United Kingdom, for instance, the use of blue (crocidolite) and brown (amosite) asbestos was banned in 1985, followed by white (chrysotile) asbestos in 1999.

These bans were implemented to protect workers and the general public from the life-threatening diseases associated with asbestos exposure, such as mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral, comprises a group of six fibrous silicate minerals known for their remarkable heat resistance and durability. These minerals can be categorised into two main types:

Serpentine Asbestos:

  • Chrysotile (White Asbestos): The most common type, with curly fibres.

Amphibole Asbestos:

  • Amosite (Brown Asbestos): Straight, brown fibres.
  • Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos): Blue in colour, known for its thin and brittle fibres.
  • Tremolite: Found as a contaminant in talc products.
  • Actinolite: Less common, found in some construction materials.
  • Anthophyllite: Also less common, found in specific products.

Exposure to asbestos fibres poses severe health risks, including:

  • Mesothelioma: A rare but aggressive cancer affecting the lining of the lungs and abdomen.
  • Lung Cancer: Particularly in smokers, asbestos exposure increases the risk.
  • Asbestosis: A progressive lung disease causing breathing difficulties.
  • Pleural Thickening: Scarring of the lung lining, leading to reduced lung function.
  • Other Cancers: Asbestos exposure can also increase the risk of throat, oesophagus, and gastrointestinal cancers.

These health implications underscore the critical importance of asbestos management and safety measures. If your home was built before 2000 and you’re in doubt, contact us to request a survey be carried out.

Asbestos Removal vs Asbestos Encapsulation

Asbestos removal and encapsulation are two distinct approaches to managing asbestos-containing materials (ACMs).

Asbestos removal involves the complete elimination of ACMs from a property. This process includes the safe and controlled removal of asbestos, followed by proper disposal. While removal ensures the complete eradication of asbestos, it can be costly and disruptive.

Asbestos encapsulation, on the other hand, entails sealing or covering ACMs with a specially designed encapsulant. Encapsulating asbestos effectively locks asbestos fibres in place, preventing their release into the air. Encapsulation is a less invasive and often more cost-effective solution, preserving the structural integrity of the building. However, it’s suitable only when the asbestos is in good condition and not significantly damaged.

Are You Legally Obligated to Have Asbestos Removed or Encapsulated?

The legal obligation to have asbestos removed or encapsulated varies depending on factors such as location, the condition of the asbestos, and its potential risk to health and safety. In many countries, including the UK, there are strict regulations governing asbestos management.

Generally, you are legally obligated to remove or encapsulate asbestos if it poses a risk to occupants, workers, or the environment. This obligation is particularly stringent in public buildings, workplaces, and rental properties. Authorities may require asbestos removal if it is damaged, deteriorating, or undergoing renovation. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in penalties and legal consequences.

To determine your specific legal obligations, it’s essential to consult with local authorities and asbestos management professionals who can assess the situation and provide guidance.

Can Anyone Tackle Asbestos Removal and Encapsulation?

In most jurisdictions, it is illegal for untrained individuals to handle asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). Asbestos poses significant health risks when disturbed, releasing harmful fibres into the air. Therefore, only certified asbestos professionals should engage in activities such as removal, encapsulation, or disposal.

Professionals, such as ours, undergo rigorous training to ensure safe practices and compliance with regulatory guidelines. Attempting to tackle asbestos without the necessary qualifications can result in serious health consequences and legal repercussions. It’s crucial to leave asbestos-related tasks to licensed experts to protect both personal well-being and legal compliance.
